By late July, the light over Central Park stretches until almost eight, the amphitheater grass fills with low-back chairs an hour before the first downbeat, and a slow current of families drifts from the concert back down toward Plaza El Paseo for dinner. If you have lived here long enough, you have felt something shift in that walk. The Lake still holds the flag-day memories. But the evenings, quietly, are moving up El Paseo.
The block that's becoming the town's living room
Plaza El Paseo has spent years as a competent errands stop with a movie theater attached. That is not what it is turning into. The Goldfinch, a California-cuisine restaurant with an elevated bar program, is preparing to open a second location at 22312-A El Paseo, joining Redshift Coffee Roasters at 22312-C as Plaza El Paseo's newest tenants, with the team targeting a late summer 2026 opening. Co-owner Ciaran Gough runs the original at 2000 Main Street in Irvine, and the group is also behind The 908 in Long Beach and Jolie in Huntington Beach, so this is not a first-time operator testing the water.
That matters because of what is already on the block. Todos Santos, in the same El Paseo Plaza, is a modern Mexican concept with a renovated dining room, patio, and a deep tequila and mezcal list. Cinépolis anchors the north end at 30632 Santa Margarita Parkway. The Bell Tower Regional Community Center sits mid-block at 22232 El Paseo, which is also the chamber address, and it doubles as the town's civic gathering point. String those pieces together, add a serious coffee roaster and a California-cuisine kitchen with a real bar program, and you have a walkable evening that did not exist here two summers ago.
Old rhythm: dinner in Foothill Ranch or Mission Viejo, then a movie on the way home. New rhythm: Redshift after the trail, Todos Santos or The Goldfinch for dinner, walk the block, catch a late show at Cinépolis.
You still have to want to be here to notice. But that is the point of a top-funnel change in a neighborhood: it rewards the people who already live inside it.
What the Lake still owns
None of this replaces Lago Santa Margarita. It just clarifies what the Lake is for. The Lake is for the anointed days of the year, the ones the calendar has been building toward since June.
July 4 is the anchor. The Beach Club at 21472 Avenida De Los Fundadores opens at 8 AM on the Fourth, access is limited to members and guests with wristbands, and the wristband lottery runs online in early June through SAMLARC.org/events. The Patriotic Bike and Trike Parade rolls at 10 AM from the Beach Club to the Amphitheater, with ice-cold rocket pops at the finish. Beach Club activities run 11 AM to 6 PM, including DJ music, community grills, lawn games, watercraft, and swimming in the Lagoon, and lakeshore activity picks back up from 5 to 8 PM at the Pine Grove and the Amphitheater with live music, food trucks, and dessert trucks. The Voice of SAMLARC winners perform God Bless America and the Star-Spangled Banner a cappella at 8:45 PM, and fireworks go up over the Lake at 9 PM.
Read that list closely. It is not a generic Fourth of July program. It is a full-day residential ritual with a wristband gate, a members-and-guests structure, and a musical hand-off from a kid singing contest into the fireworks. It works because SAMLARC treats the Lake as a members' asset, not a public park. That is also why the rest of the summer, when the Lake is calmer, the evening energy is finding somewhere else to land.
Sunday nights belong to Central Park
The Summer Concert series is the other fixed point on the calendar, and it is the most reliable reason to stay in town on a Sunday. The concerts run Sunday evenings at the Central Park amphitheater, with the sunset as backdrop, a different genre each week, and the city's recommendation to grab dinner from a local restaurant beforehand or bring a picnic. A few things about the amphitheater are worth knowing if you have not been in a while.
- Small blankets and towels may be set up the day of the concert only.
- Plastic tarps and stakes get removed because they damage the grass.
- Guests are asked to bring short, low-back beach chairs and to skip tents, canopies, and umbrellas so everyone can see.
- Concerts are smoke-free, and alcohol is limited to beer or wine purchased inside the Rotary del Sol Beer and Wine Garden.
The Rotary del Sol garden is the small detail that shifts the crowd. Families who used to leave at dusk stay through the second set, which pushes the after-concert dinner slot later, which pushes it toward the block that stays open. Which is, again, El Paseo.
The habits that make it feel like home
The summer is not all headliners. Some of what makes Rancho Santa Margarita feel like Rancho Santa Margarita is quieter, and it happens on repeat.
The Zero Trash Initiative, organized by RSM Cares under Brad McGirr, meets at 9:45 AM on the first Saturday of every month outside the Cinépolis at 30632 Santa Margarita Parkway in RSM Town Center and heads out to a specific location to pick up trash from 10 AM to noon. It is a two-hour Saturday morning that reliably ends with coffee and a strong feeling that you know your neighbors. If you have kids old enough to hold a grabber, it is one of the few volunteer commitments in South Orange County that fits inside a single soccer-free morning.
Mobile pet care clinics run every second Tuesday of the month by appointment at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Boring on paper. Genuinely useful when your dog needs shots and you would rather not drive to Irvine.
Then there is the civic layer that punctuates the calendar. The city dedicated a Veterans Monument at Civic Plaza on June 14, 2026, at 7:00 PM. Small ceremony, permanent addition, the kind of thing a longtime resident notices on the next walk past City Hall.
What this actually means for a resident
If you live here, the practical read on this summer is short.
The Lake is for the marquee days. Reserve the wristband window in early June, plan the Fourth around the 10 AM parade and the 9 PM fireworks, and treat everything in between as a bonus.
Sunday evenings are for Central Park. Bring a low-back chair, skip the canopy, and if you want a glass of wine, walk it out of the Rotary del Sol garden.
The rest of the week is where the neighborhood is actually changing. Plaza El Paseo has a coffee roaster, a modern Mexican kitchen with a real patio, a movie theater, and by late summer a California-cuisine restaurant from an operator with a track record in Irvine, Long Beach, and Huntington Beach. That is a critical mass of reasons to eat dinner in your own zip code. Two years ago it was not.
The interesting question for anyone who has lived here a decade is whether the center of gravity keeps moving in this direction, or whether Plaza El Paseo settles at "very good local block" and stops there. The Goldfinch's arrival is a real signal either way. Operators of that caliber do not open second locations in markets they think are static.
