Rancho Santa Margarita's Halloween Festival Now Runs Past Dark, and the Holiday Season Heads to the Lake

October 15, 2026

Last year, SAMLARC's Halloween Family Festival ran at Central Park from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on October 31 and was over before most porch lights went on. This year it falls on Friday, October 30, and runs from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. It closes with an outdoor screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The biggest community dates between now and mid-December are evening events, and after Halloween they move away from Central Park to Lago Santa Margarita. Rancho Family Fest wrapped up at Central Park this weekend. The next stretch of the calendar starts later in the day and ends at the water.

Same Park, Later Hours

2025 2026
Date Friday, October 31 Friday, October 30
Hours 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. 3:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Evening program None listed Movie begins at 6:30 p.m.
Location Central Park Central Park

The calendar also explains the date change. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the festival lands the night before. In 2025 it ran on Halloween afternoon and finished before evening. This year it has its own Friday night, a full day ahead of door-to-door trick-or-treating.

The later hours make room for the new feature. SAMLARC's event page introduces it this way:

"Introducing: BOO-vie Night! As the sun goes down, the fun continues with an outdoor screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas!"

The screening is in the Central Park Amphitheater on a special movie screen. It comes with a character meet-and-greet, popcorn, kettle corn and warm apple cider. SAMLARC asks families to bring blankets and low chairs.

What the Afternoon Still Holds

The daytime part runs from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m., and it's busier than last year's version. Patch's 2025 coverage of the festival mentioned safe trick-or-treating, bounce houses, a haunted house and photo booths. The 2026 program from SAMLARC includes:

  • Interactive games, music and inflatables
  • A petting zoo and a rock-climbing wall
  • A mini digger
  • Pumpkin decorating sponsored by I Can Academy OC
  • Face painting and crazy hair
  • Festive photo ops and community trick-or-treating
  • Food trucks
  • A costume contest with family, kids and baby categories

The half hour between the end of activities and the 6:30 start time gives families time to move from the booths to the Amphitheater. The event's Diamond sponsors are Andre Landscape Service, Hoag Urgent Care, and Cityside Fiber, and Spa Gregories is the Emerald sponsor.

As for cost, the city's calendar lists the festival as free. SAMLARC hasn't posted its 2026 registration details publicly; the registration section of the event page requires a member login. Last year the City of Rancho Santa Margarita said the free event required a wristband to participate, and that members could register online and pick up wristbands between October 1 and 30. SAMLARC hasn't said whether the same process applies this year, so check the member portal before the 30th.

Eight days before the festival, the Rancho Santa Margarita Public Library holds its fourth annual Monster Bash. It runs Thursday, October 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 30902 La Promesa, according to Patch's 2026 Halloween roundup.

November Moves to the Beach Club

After Halloween, community events shift to Saturday mornings at the Lago Santa Margarita Beach Club. These are the only daytime events in the stretch, and they're smaller and hands-on.

The Family Holiday Craft Workshop is on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Kids make a pine cone bird feeder, adults make a candle hurricane, and then both make a Polaroid photo frame ornament together. Fluffy Delights serves a mini pancake breakfast during the workshop. Adults and kids work on separate crafts, so SAMLARC requires a ticket for each person taking part.

A week later, the Craft & Garden Workshop: Holiday Centerpieces runs Saturday, November 14, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the same Beach Club. Despite the name, it's an adult workshop where participants make a holiday door swag. Neither workshop page lists a price publicly; registration for both requires a login.

Two days after the family workshop, the longest-running event of the season begins. SAMLARC's Holiday Home Decorating Contest is open to SAMLARC members from November 9 through December 15. The posted rules include a few details that matter for planning:

  • A home can enter more than one category but can win only one.
  • The "Merriest Neighborhood" category is the exception. It can be won on top of an individual category.
  • Merriest Neighborhood requires at least five participating homes, and one neighbor submits the entry for the group.
  • Displays must be family-friendly and must not create safety hazards or interfere with neighboring properties.
  • Entering means agreeing that your display may be photographed, and winners are featured in SAMLARC's e-newsletter, website and social media.

The five-home minimum makes Merriest Neighborhood a group decision. On a cul-de-sac where neighbors want to compete, the conversation has to start before November 9.

December Belongs to the Lakeshore

The two biggest December dates are both Saturday evenings at the Lago Santa Margarita Lakeshore, with no registration required.

The Christmas Tree Lighting is Saturday, December 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. SAMLARC invites "Members and guests" to enjoy the sights, sounds and treats of the season and sing along to holiday music. Carols 'Round the Lake follows a week later, on Saturday, December 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., also at the Lakeshore and also without registration.

Earlier that week, the North Pole Hotline has Santa calling SAMLARC children on Tuesday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 2, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. An older, undated SAMLARC page lists different dates, December 3 and 4. The pages tied to this year's calendar list December 1 and 2.

From October 30 through December 12, every major community date except the two November workshops is an evening event, and the two in December are at the lake.

Whose Calendar This Is

Almost everything above is on SAMLARC's calendar, not the city's. SAMLARC calls itself the master homeowners association for 13,645 Rancho Santa Margarita homes. The association's borders differ from the city limits. According to its FAQ, homeowners who buy inside the SAMLARC community agree to abide by its governing documents.

That's why access rules differ from event to event. The decorating contest is open only to members, and the tree lighting welcomes members and guests. The Halloween festival is listed as free on the city calendar, but its registration is behind a member login. If you live in Rancho Santa Margarita, the first thing to check is whether your home is inside SAMLARC's boundaries. That determines how much of this calendar you can sign up for directly.
